My surrealistic landscape paintings explore the Zen Buddhist concept of a "time being". The works combine simultaneous moments of past and future into a multidimensional image that is viewed as present. Spaces shift, twist, and disintegrate into gestural marks to create intimate places suspended in time. The paintings evoke familiar landscape elements placed within impossible spatial dynamics where structural forms disappear into passages that emerge, dissolve, and transform. A naturalistic color palette is invigorated with unexpected interruptions of fiery organic grids, floating pastel clouds, and atmospheric passages of glowing color to enhance the paintings' ambiguous sense of place and time. The eye flicks across energy laden textures and meditates on expanses of quiet chromatic grays that gently shift hue.
The ideas for the paintings begin with experiencing and documenting the landscape. Writings, photographs, and memories are intuitively dissected, rearranged, and integrated into compositions. Through the process of painting, colors, textures, and forms transform and evolve. The final paintings seek to create intimate and dynamic relationships that visually and emotionally both ground and transport the viewer.
